The Vatican issues an official statement that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant

Story

When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Many of the actions Cardinal Lawrence and the other cardinals take during the film’s conclave process are true and accurate to the Catholic faith and centuries of tradition. After the pope’s death, his ring (called the Fisherman’s Ring) is removed and destroyed; this is done so that it cannot be used to forge the papal seal on documents.

The College of Cardinals is housed in apartments (Domus Sanctae Marthae, Saint Martha’s House) to eat and sleep between votes. Finally, the windows and doors to the Sistine Chapel, where the actual elections take place and the votes are cast, are blacked out, locked, and barred to preserve the secrecy of the conclave. Some of the latest and greatest security measures taken in real life are also shown: when the conclave that elected Pope Francis I was convened in 2013, the Sistine Chapel was protected from bugs and other electronic listening devices; all the servants of the conclave were issued identity cards, as a reporter disguised as a servant was discovered at the conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI in 2005; all members of the College of Cardinals were required to surrender their cell phones and other electronic devices.

If there were only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mysteries. Let us pray that God will give us a pope who doubts. And let him give us a pope who sins and asks for forgiveness and continues the work.

The acting, intrigue, dialogue and cinematography are spot on throughout, but the warning signs are evident early in the film. When the potential candidates talk about being a new liberal progressive church, it makes you wonder where else they’re going with it, and boy, do they go with it, I’ll let the odd shift in tone go, except for the ending, which I won’t spoil, which comes from another movie and puts it over the top of everything they’re making the film about, it feels like a slightly less-than-anticipated political thriller about what’s a big event in the world when it happens but then derails like a roller coaster in the final scenes.
